NAVY PEOPLE: To be chosen for GALLIPOLI IS a great honour

This ANZAC Day, Mitchelton couple Peter and Jenny Doherty will be watching something very special on TV.
Their son Steve, 21, will be part of the Australia’s Federation Guard contingent at the dawn service in ANZAC Cove.
Steve, a former Wilston Grange AFL player, said goodbye to his part-time Arana Hills Coles job and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 2007, straight from Mount Maria Senior College.
“Dad was in the Navy,” said Steve.

“I’ve specialised as a Bosun’s Mate – which means being employed in seamanship and gunnery.
“I volunteered for the Guard as I wanted to have a break from being at sea; to work in a tri-Service unit; and get fitter.
“Gallipoli is not my first overseas trip with the Guard. I’ve already walked the Kokoda Track to see what the diggers went through.
“But to be chosen for Gallipoli is a great honour — to see where it all happened and to represent my country where the ANZACspirit was born.
“After the ceremonies we’ll have a day or two in Istanbul. We’ll get to see the Blue Mosque and the other sights. I can’t wait to soak up the history and culture of Turkey,” said Steve.
