NAVY PEOPLE: SPORT AND SEAMANSHIP

Alice Springs boy Luke Ettridge has managed to mix the sea and his passion for sport. He joined the Navy in 2004 and has specialised as a physical trainer. He’s already been promoted to Leading Seaman.
Aboard Anzac Class frigate HMAS Parramatta Luke is responsible for fitness classes, testing and recreational activities, as well as keeping watch on the bridge of the ship.
“I love that my job is based around sport and fitness. I am the only physical trainer onboard and, because of that, I have a lot of social interaction with the crew, “he said.
Luke is now based in Sydney with his brother and girlfriend, who are both in the Navy, while his parents are still at home in ‘the Alice’.
The Centralian College graduate first joined the Navy as a bosun’s mate, which means on-deck seamanship and small arms skills. He transferred to physical trainer in 2007, after he had shown initiative and passion to lead sport and recreational activities.

“My PT sessions on the deck are a lot of fun as I try to mix up all kinds of training and cater to the needs of the guys and girls who turn up for training.”
Luke and his shipmates are now in transit to South East Asia to take part in international exercises and port visits.
Leading Seaman Ettridge said that South East Asian trips were a great opportunity for the crew to play sport with.
“It is a really great experience to play sport internationally foreign militaries and sporting clubs because it is a bit of fun after we have battled it out at sea.”
