The number of men applying to join the Navy's elite Underwater Demolition Team is on the rise despite its reputation for very intense training.
According to the Navy on Friday, over 180 people applied for 52 openings on the UDT between January and February, boosting its competition rate to an all-time high of 3.5 to one. That's a dramatic jump from last year when the rate was 1.7 to one.
Analysts say that the unit's successful rescue of the Korean freighter Samho Jewelry and its crew from Somali pirates last month was the major reason behind the surge.
