FIGHTING (not necessarily valiantly…) Big Cig resists arrest for ‘crimes against health’ at Devonport Naval Base.
Cig – aka WO ‘Fruity’ Paskins (Paskins sounds like ‘pastilles’ apparently…) from the Flag Officer Sea Training organisation – was handcuffed then bundled into the back of a van by RN police at HMS Drake as the West Country establishment joined in National No Smoking Day.
Different Big Cigs were maltreated across RN bases yesterday – the 28th annual day dedicated to quitting – in an effort to stamp out the dreaded weed.
Aside from the frivolity of a man dressed as an oversized cigarette being bashed around there were some more practical attempts to help sailors and marines quit smoking.
Nurses, dental experts and health professionals in Devonport visited HMS Torbay to offer submariners advice on giving up – including carrying out carbon monoxide testing on smokers among the boat’s crew to show how the habit was affecting their health.
Similar tests were offered 100 or so miles up the road at RNAS Yeovilton where Big Cig and a team of health experts from the Somerset air station visited every squadron and department.
“One in five people in the UK smoke and of these two thirds want to stop,” said PO(DN) Nikki Hammill, organising the no-smoking campaign at Yeovilton.
“I am an ex-smoker and it isn’t easy to give up but it is important to make sure you are ready to quit.”
Sailors or marines who want to quit should contact their unit PTIs, medical or dentists.
